Description of DTC code P0342 Generic

The CMP (camshaft position sensor) is an electronic device used in engines to record the speed of the camshaft. This information is then sent to the ECM (Engine Control Module), which uses it to control fuel injection as well as ignition timing.

The camshaft retraction is detected by the CMP sensor and thus identifies a particular cylinder. The piston position is also determined by the CMP sensor. If there is a fault in this sensor, the ECM will not know when the valve is opening or closing.

OBDII diagnostic code P0342 refers to a low or insufficient CMP sensor signal.
